Self-Care in a Pandemic: Maintaining Your Mental Health

Self-care isn’t just something a few of us should practice. In times like these, adopting a healthy, sustainable self-care routine can help to alleviate and lessen the effects of stress and anxiety.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care consists of the actions that you consciously (and regularly) practice to protect your mental, physical, and spiritual health. Ultimately, self-care is designed to improve your wellbeing and offer a higher quality of life.

Self-Care Tip #1: Establish A Schedule

You might not realize it, but our bodies operate on a schedule themselves. By identifying the things that we need to do throughout the day, we can better prepare ourselves for whatever life may throw our way.

Simply, when we adopt a schedule, we condition ourselves to accomplish the tasks that need to be done – no questions asked.

Self-Care Tip #2: Follow Through

It’s easy to get lost in the hubbub of everyday life. Although it may seem hard to see the benefits right away, following through with your schedule will ensure that you stay on track when everything else seems off.

Self-Care Tip #3: Start Small

Every day is a new start to our journey. Try your best to simply put one foot in front of the other and continue on. Remember, we can only really do just one thing at a time.

Self-Care for the Family

Things may seem a little overwhelming when there’s kids in the picture. To be successful in your self-care routine, you should incorporate your children and encourage them to adopt similar self-care strategies for when times get tough.

We know that times aren’t easy right now and hope that these self-care tips can guide you in the right direction. If you’re still struggling, we can connect you with the Optum support helpline by Sunbelt provider UnitedHealthcare.
